Your tooth has different layers of tissue to protect the inner tooth root. Underneath the enamel and dentin is the pulp, a soft tissue that contains nerves, blood vessels, and other tissue. When your tooth experiences physical trauma or severe decay, bacteria can get into the pulp and cause infection, inflammation, and pain.

When this happens, a root canal is necessary to save the tooth. During a root canal, the pulp, nerves, bacteria, and any decay are removed and the remaining space is filled with special material to restore the tooth to its original appearance and function.

At Howell Family Dentist, our goal is to save your natural teeth and avoid any extractions. Root canals are highly successful and save a tooth that would otherwise die and have to be removed. If you experience any warning signs of an infected tooth, it’s important to identify and treat it before it progresses. Contact us to schedule an appointment!
